many system don't have a separate beeper, and directly wires the beep output to audio card. This is especially true for laptop. If audio driver cannot understand this case, and treats the beep input as a generic recording source like MIC, probably, the beep is muted.
You can try unloading your audio driver, reboot system and see if beep works because most BIOS enables beep input by default btw, during POST, does it sound ? -minskey John ??: > HI Steve, > You were really close.
