Since CDE is going away, that means that Sun's wonderful Calendar Tool
is also going away. Has Sun re-written this program for GNOME or
selected a suitable stand-alone (i.e. not tied to a huge web browser
or email program) alternative yet? This Calendar Tool has long been a
favorite of SunOS users (starting in the Open Windows days), and I
have seen thousands of people using it. The Calendar Tool was one of
Sun's contributions to CDE so Sun must have some original rights to
the code.

I spent a day or two looking at various open source calendar programs,
but it seemed like they were all designed by the same committee and
lacked basic common-sense features found in the existing relatively
simple Calender Tool. I did not find a program which was capable of
accomplishing all the basic tasks. Some programs looked pretty and
pretended to work, but did not actually work. It is like purchasing
an alarm clock which does not actually alarm, or goes off at the wrong
times.

By basic common-sense features I mean things like AM/PM support and
the ability to create a new item in the calendar by cloning an
existing item. It is also important for the program to be able to
notify of appointments by sending an email, popping up a reminder
window (yes, a real window!), or making a noise (or a combination of
these) with a schedule dictated by the user. For example, I often
have a reminder email sent to me a day in advance, but want the noise
and pop-up 15 minutes before the scheduled event.

Thanks,

Bob
