The current plans call for removing all of the CDE applications.
The libraries required for binary compatibility will stay, as
will dtksh, since that's required to keep compatibility with
scripts written to use it. When the removal of the bulk of the
apps will happen is TBD - obviously we can't drop dtterm & dtwm
as long as the Solaris installer uses them, but Caiman is coming
to solve that.
xterm is being upgraded to the current X.Org/XFree86 version in
Nevada build 91 (already there in OpenSolaris 2008.05). I don't
know what improvements are coming for gnome-terminal, but if you
haven't filed bug reports on either xterm or gnome-terminal, odds
are high that the developers don't know what you need from them.
(And of course, the sources to both are open for fixing yourself.)
