Just tried the following two ways to open some pdf file from Firefox 3.0.1 on my Solaris 10 U5 box here(Solaris 10 5/08 s10s_u5wos_10 SPARC). The acroread version(/usr/bin/acroread) is 7.0.8 05/08/2006.
1. I didn't create a plugin file "nppdf.so" in the Firefox plugins directory. When I clicked the pdf file link(http://www.mozilla.org/projects/xpcom/book/cxc/), a window pops up to notify me whether I want to open the file with "Adobe Acrobat Reader" or save it somewhere. I chose to open and acrobat reader was successfully launched. 2. Copy the nppdf.so file from /usr/sfw/lib/mozilla/plugins to the Firefox plugins directory. Follow the same steps above will open the pdf file in the Firefox window directly. Where did you get the acrobat 8.1.2? Could you try the old one with Firefox 3.0.1 on your box? How about open pdf file in a separate window instead of in the Firefox window as a plugin? I'm not a heavy Solaris 10 user. So my Firefox profile and the system is almost the original one. How about creating a new Firefox profile to have a try?
