that's the problem!
gdm at ultra20:~$ ls -lsd /var/lib/gdm/.gconf.mandatory
    3 drwxr-x--T   2 root      gdm            3 d?c. 29 11:20 
/var/lib/gdm/.gconf.mandatory

after chown:
chown gdm /var/lib/gdm/.gconf.mandatory

everything is ok, and i can have my pretty desktop background and the 
Face Browser (as it is the home machine)
