To set the GDM configuration settings, you need to ensure:
1) That you have write permissions to the gdm user's directory.
2) That you modify the right GConf directory. GDM does not use the
default ~gdm/.gconf directory. Instead it uses separate GConf
directories in a per-seat (or per-display) fashion. The GConf
directory for each set is in the ~gdm/(SeatName)/.gconf directory.
Users should probably just modify the ~gdm/.gconf.mandatory
setting as recommended by the examples in the manpage, since
this ensures the setting is visible to all seats.
Note that you do need to restart GDM by running "svcadm restart gdm"
or by rebooting for configuration changes to take effect.
Since the command I provided failed with a permissions error, could
you verify that you have write permission to the ~gdm/.gconf.mandatory
directory when you are the gdm user? If not, there may be a permissions
problem on the directory that may need fixing. If this is the problem,
you may need to chmod the directory as a workaround for now.
