The kernel should include whatever is required to reliably switch video
modes, or, to otherwise reset things so that virtual consoles can be
switched without relying on the hung X process. I'm not advocating putting
acceleration code there, or anything. (And I'd advocate a microkernel 
anyway instead of a monolithic C timebomb, but that's beside the point.)
