Hello all,

*tl;dr Alopex is an initiative to evolve the Firefox OS experience into
"an open OS that puts Web content first". You can get involved and follow
progress @ **[1 <https://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox_OS/Alopex>], and on irc:
#alopex*

*What is Alopex?*
Alopex is the project name we chose for describing our initiative to evolve
the design and overall experience of Firefox OS.
Alopex used to be the genus under which the Arctic Fox was included [2
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arctic_fox>] and it's a cool female mutant
Arctic Fox from TMNT [3 <http://turtlepedia.wikia.com/wiki/Alopex>].

In the last few months, a Firefox OS Vision was established of delivering
an uncompromising, user-first, web-centric mobile experience.
In parallel to the v2.5 work, we're working on establishing an actionable
plan and concepts in support of this vision.

*Goal*
We want to *deliver an open OS that puts Web content first *and are working
with product, engineering and research to assemble a working team.
More than just applying new visuals/animations/components it is about
crafting an end-to-end Firefox experience that:

   - Puts Web content in the center of the experience
   - Directly addresses the shortcomings of the Web on mobile
   - Emphasizes the Web's strengths of immediacy and continuity across
   devices
   - Is centered around simplicity yet puts the user fully in control
   - Creates an open platform for participation, and promotes community
   contribution

To be clear, many efforts are already underway in a number of these areas
and many will require evangelism / support beyond what we will build into
the product. This initiative will not replace those efforts, but will seek
to build on top of the amazing work that has gone into customizations
(add-ons), the ability to save / use Web content (Pin the Web), data sync
and more.

*Open Process*
Design work inherently requires tight collaboration, discussions and more
which can come into conflict with our desire to be open, if we let it. We
want this to be an open process and are committing to have open channels
for participation and following along.
If you would like more information on the project, or are interested in
getting involved, we’ve set up a wiki [1
<https://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox_OS/Alopex>]. As the project progresses
(note: the timeline in flux and will be updated), we will also be posting
concepts to the wiki and emailing this list for your feedback.

You can also find us in #alopex if you would like to reach out. If you
have specific questions for UX try finding Rob (robmac), Przemek (przemek),
Harly (harly) or Juwei (Juwei). We look forward to hearing from you.

Watch for more updates in the coming weeks.

Thanks,

The Firefox OS UX and Product teams
