I'm sure you meant "can" instead of "can't" ;-) but anyway, here's my +1.
FYI, as of few days ago, xalan factored out the serializers from their main jar file (I know this because they broke 70% of the gump tree in doing so ;-)
my +1 on using our own serializers.
