I've just spent a bit of time looking on the OOo site to see if work put into the public domain would be allowed on the website. It's not clear, but perhaps I just have not found the right place.
The protection is not just for the Author, but also for the User and other entities that may decide to use the document down the road. Granted the possibility is remote, but the possibility exists that an author may turn around and try to sue the company.
