Yes, I hadn't really considered this a bug. Those are per-connections metrics
and we assign the bootstrap connection node ids -1, -2, etc. I agree it is
pretty odd though. Not sure if/how we should fix it.
One thing we could do would be to report connection metrics as
kafka.producer.host:port.metric instead of using node id.
