Clutter takes a different approach than Hildon (i.e GTK+) running on top
of the GPU (i.e OpenGL) and offering a toolkit to build fast, more
modern, animated and bespoke device user interfaces with features like
3D and physics. I dont see it as much as what is wrong with Hildon but
more an evolution in device capability's and the UI technologies also
evolving as to best take advantage. 

Also note Maemo ('home' of Hildon) have announced they also intend to
use Clutter in the future;
