Well, first if you want to keep the index sorted even per-segment, you need
some hooks so that segments that are merged stay sorted, otherwise, very
quickly they'll just become arbitrarily sorted again.
About global sorting, I think that if we allow to terminate per-segment, then
global sorting has lower priority (though still would be good if we can tackle
that nicely) because it will be just like doing distributed search on a single
index .. no big deal.
