Hey Micheal,

in general, you are right that I'm ok with this, I also added another line later:

"Services I like too but I think it doesn't need to move to navigator. Services is good also for beginner to see on the first glance beacuse there you have databases".

And I see it as Matthias. And the service tab is opened by default and it should be as it is. We should not remove functionality, that was already there.

So I'm more for the 4th columns and not removing services. Because it is important for docker, databases, plugins that uses it etc.

Cheers

Chris

as an attempt to summarize the discussion so far:

Eirik: better to leave favorites closed since less important
Matthias: in favor as long Services tab stays open too
Chris: in favor, also for opening Favorites tab instead of Services
Neil: big +1, also for opening Favorites tab instead of Services

Neil did also comment on ASF#netbeans slack in favor for layout options B or C,
worrying about problems on small screens when three-column layout is used.

Me: I am in favor of opening it by default and ok with leaving Services closed
(since
it became less useful over time).

please correct me if I interpreted something wrong.

the easiest way forward would be to clarify if Eirik means this as -1 or not,
if it isn't, we would have achieved consensus* for layout C which is essentially
the "minimum viable product" regarding this change request.

otherwise we might have to start a vote or drop this change entirely.

best regards,

michael

Of course, many more layouts are possible, those are just slightly changed
variants of the one of NB 27.

A - three column
B - nav+services group
C - 4 tab group (aka "don't change anything but open it")
looks like the dev list removed the attachments

uploaded them to https://mbien.dev/tmp/screens/

(thanks Ernie for the notification)

Hello,

Once the first project opens, NB will open the Projects and Files tabs (logical
and physical
project view as they are called in the implementation, now with tooltips #8786).

I think we should also open the Favorites tab in the same tab group, since it
serves as
view for non-project based use cases (also #8798 for adding the project dir by
default).

It might get tight in that tab group since the Services tab is there too, so
this might
mean that we move it over where the Navigator is, or possibly not open Services
by default? (I have it usually closed or at least minimized and generally don't
use it very
often)

As stretch goal I would want to open the Favorites tab on first file open
additionally
to first project open, but I am not quite sure how to do that yet. This might be
interesting for education and "compact java file" use cases which don't need
projects (yet).

best regards,

michael
