INFRA answered they won't help since they only cater for websites they maintain, while this one is externally hosted on SourceForge. I admit this is quite reasonable.
So: Extensions and Templates are now sending mail through my SMTP server; this works but it's not the best approach, and I remain available for replacing this with a more "shared" resource that can be used with username and password on port 587/STARTTLS. My earlier attempt with GMail failed so I would rule it out.
