Can we help somehow?
mmh not sure if you can help at the moment. That we will open source the guide is as likely as not (everything else would be surprising for me). But we currently evaluating the format. The guide was transformed into solbook which is a docbook derivate and used inside Sun's documentation department. The documentation department prefer docbook as source format to make use of a lot of existing tools to work with the format. Docbook is established as the preferred format for documentation in the open source world. On the other side we have our Open Document Format and the office would be the best tool to work on the docu but there are some disadvantages (i think most of them are post processing issues, i will provide more info asap) compared to docbook. Our docbook filter hasn't the quality to use it in production, maybe some volunteers are interested and like to work on improvements of the filter. I am personal are flexible but i don't want to loose the support of Sun's documentation department which of course can be a big help to create a professional guide.

We also thought about a transformation into the wiki but it is not yet clear how we can extract the relevant info from the wiki to prepare a usable guide (e.g. PDF) as we can it currently. Although a wiki would have some advantages we currently prefer a different format.

Maybe you have some further ideas what would be the best way to maintain and work with such a huge document. Splitting in smaller parts is already planned ;-) (DevGuide 1-5 or something like that) But that wouldn't change the problem because even the split parts of the guide are parts of one big project.
