actually, I've just realised I've only checked in half of the
solution... but now I'm confused.

Right now when we call bgisready() in the "wrong answer" case,
we'll get a message saying the socket is ready, but the message
on that socket will be the wrong response.

should we then close the socket anyway, and forget the query altogether as
a lost cause -- or should we keep the socket, and keep calling bgisready()
waiting for the *real* answer?
