Hi Maarten---
Thanks for getting back to me. See below.

Hi Kay,
The pages you created [3,4] are already a improvements over the current
about and new user pages [1,2]... but I think there is still much room for
greater improvement... :o I think you(/we) should consider not creating
the new about page based on the current about page...
I think you should try and optimize, or create a new page, the page
further and try to accomodate for (the good old) linear reading. It is now
set up as a kind of definition list, it is still not a coherent story that
is really nice to read. I´d prefer a much more linear story...
OK
I´d skip the detail about the different types of projects, maybe mention
them, but don´t specify them as thoroughly as done currently.
OK
Additionally, instead of editing about and new separately, I'd probably
try to merge the new user and about pages. The new homepage won´t have a
new user button anymore, so this page gets hidden away from the target
group. The target group of this page doesn't know that much about OOo, and
should be able to access it quite easily. Maybe you could integrate the
neccessary parts of the current about page into the new user page as you
created it, and make that the new about page.
Oh, OK...I'll work from this angle. I see we seem to be going to
why.openoffice.org for "newbies" (at least that's what's beens
uggested), so yes, it makes sense to combine new.html with
/about_us/index.html
[1] http://about.openoffice.org/index.html
[2] http://www.openoffice.org/about_us/new.html
[3] http://website.openoffice.org/tryouts/Jan2008/about/
[4] http://website.openoffice.org/tryouts/Jan2008/about/new.html
Do you like to edit it on the wiki? I believe it is an easier place to
develop content, e.g. at:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Website/Content/about
Probably a good idea...but I wanted to see how the styling would go on
the main site. But having others deal with this content as well would be
helpful
Also, we should structure the page using semantic headings <h1>,<h2>,
etc., not just bold text.
hmmm...OK, I'm lazy :/.
Good comments...I'll (hopefully) port to the wiki today and deal more
the content per your suggestions.
g.,
Maarten
When someone gets a chance to review this, I would like to replace
http://www.openoffice.org/about_us/new.html
(our main New user link from the home page)
-- with --
http://website.openoffice.org/tryouts/Jan2008/about/new.html
justification: do we really need to explain elements on the home page?
and if it gets replaced soon, this needs to go anyway. And, I added some
verbiage that had previously been on "About" that seemed more useful to
users than the rest of the info on "About"
and replace
http://about.openoffice.org/index.html (the About tab index page)
-- with --
http://website.openoffice.org/tryouts/Jan2008/about/
justification: See comments above. "About" really seems more
developer/contributor centric to me and is kind of referenced that way
in Louis's "introduction" page on new.html. I guess I'm of a mind right
now to *try* to keep user-centric (keep it friendly), vs. more
contributor-centric (details, details, details) on separate pages.
I know everyone is very busy with other things right now, but when you
get a moment. Thanks.
