it's a two pronged approach--first trying LiveConnect (direct access to
java), and if that fails, running a tiny applet.
I started out with a somewhat complicated script I found, then just
pared it down to what we really needed.

Just make sure this won't break localized downloads: some localizations,
like Italian, have approved only builds with (or without) JRE until now
on some platforms.
