Just sharing some of my views. My motivation to work on Adium is due to bug fixing. "Scratching an Itch". That's also how most of us start programming in a large project.
Luckily, Adium is written mostly using Cocoa. The open source projects on the Mac/iPhone platform using Cocoa have the most readable and understandable source code, I ever known in my lifetime.
