Just to chime in on *MY* preference... SMC 1211 TX cards. 8139 based. Runs on every Linux distro I tried and Windows with no hassles. Cost is anywhere from US $ 7.50 to $ 20.00 . I bought mine in a 20 pack which broke down to $ 7.50 a piece.
