Okay,

I'm thinking that's exactly what we'll do. We will start with SME server (unless anybody has a better option) because of the great systems they've already put into place, i.e. the web interface, and the templates.

Well strip it down, basically take out the file server side of things, and take it down to basically just the web serving and e-mail handling. We'll continue with the virtual domain end of things, and add that same type of virtual domain handling with e-mail. Finally, we'll wrap it all back up into a nice web control panel.

What am I missing?

Thanks

If you just want a virtual domain mail server, you'll need to strip SME server down to bare bones and add one of the virtual domain mail packages which already exist - although you'll probably come back to VMailMgr http://www.vmailmgr.org/.

I have used this package in the past and was quite happy with its ease
of configuration and ease of use. It may have enen improved since I
last used it several years ago.
