David thanks a lot, I modified NodeConfig to use the central freenet.hlp file (which is quite useless without content, propose a sensible diskcache default and turned transient off by default. I replaced the broken snapshots (still uploading in fact). I installed this version a couple of times on both Win98 and NT and it worked fine on both.
