MSysGit comes with its own copy of MSys. It's pretty transparent to the

And if I put git.exe in it's own directory the only .dll it complains
about is libiconv2.dll (well that, and some missing templates). Using
these two alone seems to work fine.

Ah, that's interesting! Must be a recent change. So they finally rewrote all the remaining bash/perl components to C? If so, that should give it a significant speed boost, most noticeable on Windows.
