I can't count the number of personal messages and bulletins my packet BBS has forwarded in the last 10+ years. I'm glad not everyone thinks the way you do about automation of text.
BBS traffic (Packet) on dedicated channels is just fine, to me. What is scary is the push to open up our HF communications so that automated data can share voice spectrum.
