Paul you have it right up to here. At this time there is no software that will do Pactor or Amtor ARQ mode due to the tight timing required between to stations.
I did do some playing with a linux program but it would only do 35 to 40 per cent of what the TNC would do. If you are going to play Amtor, Pactor and packet on the HF bands and have a good link you will be better of getting, as you put it an " proprietary box ".
