Me too! I am a staunch Free/Libre Software supporter but I also like
to think I know great software when I see it. Tumblr is great
software.

On the one hand, Tumblr is doing a great public good by making
blogging *so easy* to enter; they increase media literacy and the ease
of citizen reporting with their best-in-class platform. Furthermore,
by centralizing infrastructure improvements and security updates, they
eliminate the twin Wordpress-related pitfalls of hijacked and
overloaded websites.

At the same time, Tumblr is non-Free and so it's up to the Free world
to out-compete using Free tools. What we have in freeculture.org is a
capable sysadmin who handles centralized infrastructure and security
updates along with tools which are entirely controlled by ourselves.
If there are specific problems with what we have available now, I
propose that we should put forth an effort to fix those problems and
remove technical or perceived barriers to entry for Free Culture
bloggers.
