Network effect is exactly the reason why we should not let free
alternatives down.

I mentioned it before* and will continue: as this group, these
representatives, advocates of free culture, we are obliged to value
freedom just as high as ease-of-use. It _is_ ok to use Tumblr, to have a
Facebook group, to have a Twitter account to reach out – as long as we use
a similar free platform for the same purpose that also distributes the
information. Simple crossposting or copypasting, if we wouldn’t go that
extra mile (click) we would not be what we are.

Yes, it might be insanely automagically easy™ to post to Tumblr. But then
again, what do we stand for? As pointed out, WordPress seems to have the
same or similar features. Who if not us should showcase them and in turn
make WordPress (or Identi.ca for that matter) more popular and eventually
help in making those services better? There is reciprocity between level
of usage and service quality, someone has to start.

tl;dr: we don’t need to draw a line, we should use both to satisfy
outreach as well as principles.

* in the role of the obnoxious person at the Diaspora talk, asking about
Google Groups & GitHub. I like you all. :)
