I run Linux in a KVM, as it is significantly easier to duplicate (zfs snapshot, send and receive) to another system to replicate.
VirtualBox doesn't want/allow replication of a running system, and while you might not like the idea of zfs snapshotting a running live system it does work very well, and (at least with linux) just acts like a power failure happened when you come to recover on the standby.
