We used VBox for such cases since Solaris 10, long before KVM or xVM got added
;)

There used to be issues with clock skew which upset e.g. MSAD controller
replicas in VMs, but it is fixable with NTP and/or VBox VM options.

I/O performance tends to suffer, otherwise pretty stable for us.

VBox VMs as a process can run in zones, benefitting from more resource controls
and access separation, admin delegation etc. if needed. Note also my vboxsmf
project to run VMs as SMF instances.
