There is some early research in the software engineering literature that discusses the effect of designing based on a prototype or on a formal UI spec.
Boehm et al, 1984]. B.W. Boehm, T.L. Gray, and T. Seewaldt, "Prototyping Versus Specifying: A Multiproject Experiment," IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering, Vol. SE-10, No. 3, May 1984, pp. 290 - 302. It might be worth digging this old, but classic article up.
