BJ Fogg's book on Persuasive Technology talks about the reward system being one of the many ways in which technology could be used to motivate changes in behavior. There are also examples provided within each discussion topic.
Interestingly...what Jesse and Anne are talking about is also one of the methods in the book. Its called tunneling which involves guiding the person step by step, till the end goal is reached.
