Hi everyone: Over the past 9-months, I've been assisting the National Museum of Hip-Hop with their web site and social media presence. After the museum first settled on a name, National Hip-Hop Museum, they went with NHHM.org. Then, there was some discussion and the name changed to National Museum of Hip-Hop, so we registered NMOH.org.
My better judgment, the fact that I've been a DJ for over 30-years and have worked in and around Hip-Hop culture, as well as hearing people call this thing: "the hip hop museum," told me that we should register " hiphopmuseum.org," not just to host the web site, but also to make sure we owned it, just in case. I also put their Facebook at facebook.com/hiphopmuseum. And, I registered " twitter.com/hiphopmuseum," just to ensure we had that as well. Of course, they chose to start tweeting at "nmoh," but I let that go for now. At least we have both. In my mind, usability and SEO roads all lead to "hiphopmuseum.org" and anything related to the words "hip-hop museum." If we were to start branding "NMoH," that means nothing to anyone and its hard to remember. Was it NHOM? MNOH? OHMN? You get the point. Plus, what would you rather see on a T-shirt? NMOH.org or HipHopMuseum.org?
