I'm going with Hip-Hop-Museum.org as it is likely that your customers will go to a search engine and use "hip hop museum" as their search phase. Parsing the terms with hypens makes it easier for the search engine to give you credit for having search terms in your URL (a highly prized location).

You can have various domain names all point to the one. Yes I agree that the hiphopmuseum.org would be instantly recognisable on a shirt etc (domains can have hyphens as well hip-hopmuseum.org - not sure if it needs to be always written with the hyphen). As the actual registered name of the museum is National Museum of Hip-Hop (NMOH), and most other references are different, are their legal requirements to display and use the name that was registered? I know here in Australia that a registered 'business' name must appear exactly as registered somewhere. For example if Superfly Business Supplies is the registered name, even if branding is reduced to just 'Superfly' the full name still has to be appear somewhere prominent. Is that the same there in the States? I wouldn't worry too much about having multiple lead in points, at the end of the day you want people and their traffic. Give them as many pathways as you can - I'd just ensure that the final page/site clearly and instantly displays what the Museum will be known as so I know when I get there that I've found the right site and not a clone that someone's made to steal your traffic. In terms of SEO, yes your suggestion would return a better result but that's just one element of the puzzle, how the site is put together and how you market 'offline' will all impact on the search results. After the museum first settled on a name, National Hip-Hop Museum, they went with NHHM.org. Then, there was some discussion and the name changed to National Museum of Hip-Hop, so we registered NMOH.org. My better judgment, the fact that I've been a DJ for over 30-years and have worked in and around Hip-Hop culture, as well as hearing people call this thing: "the hip hop museum," told me that we should register " hiphopmuseum.org," not just to host the web site, but also to make sure we owned it, just in case. I also put their Facebook at facebook.com/hiphopmuseum. And, I registered " twitter.com/hiphopmuseum," just to ensure we had that as well. Of course, they chose to start tweeting at "nmoh," but I let that go for now. At least we have both. In my mind, usability and SEO roads all lead to "hiphopmuseum.org" and anything related to the words "hip-hop museum." If we were to start branding "NMoH," that means nothing to anyone and its hard to remember. Was it NHOM? MNOH? OHMN? You get the point. Plus, what would you rather see on a T-shirt? NMOH.org or HipHopMuseum.org?
