Our HCI student group at the University of Michigan, SOCHI, has held a variety of events - design jams (with and without sponsors like Mozilla, Yahoo!, TechSmith, etc), portfolio an resume reviews, tech talks by students or professionals, and student ignite events. It's also been just as important to have lots of social events (like happy hours) to give people informal chances to share knowledge.
