I've seen folks mention that the more modern ink jets may not dry out

I haven't had problems with that in years.

We print fairly infrequently, but every time I've seen an inkjet
that's used that little, it's always dried out.

It takes me multiple years to use up a ream of paper. I just don't do a
lot of printing. Ink Jet ink is one of those things I do not keep a back
up supply of, because it just seems to last forever. I have an HP
Officejet Pro L7650 All-in-One. This is my third HP All-in-One. It has
both kinds of network, but I immediately disabled the wireless (after
verifying that it did indeed work).

I can even print and scan from FreeBSD (it has a nice web page). Linux,
MacOS, also not a problem. This one is old enough to have long ago hit
the EOL phase, but there was still an update pushed out (perhaps last
year, don't remember).

I was curious, and looked at the date on the colored ink (via the web
page). It says the cartridge was new in 2011-10-22. The print heads were
new in 2008-02-26; they've never been replaced. When this printer dies,
I will get another one of the same type; probably something similar to
the one referred to by Tom.

Here's an informative statistic. I've never reset the number of pages.
Since 2008, there have been 1188 pages printed. It even knows that 13
of those were envelopes. Really, I don't print a lot.
