from what I understand, it's more secure b/c the chip produces a one-time use
hash of the number and feeds that into the payment system, not your actual
credit card number.  I think it gets hashed with the amount of the payment too
but am not sure about that.  

when the next Target hack happens they get a bunch of expired hashes and not
actual credit card numbers like with swipe.

It doesn't help with losing your physical card but it is better security than
what we have.
