LOPSA has a HootSuite (HS) account which is configured to permit posting to
various social media: Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn (if I recall correctly without
logging into it), and Facebook.
Persons working with the Communications Committee (eg, me) are made members of
the LOPSA "team" in HS. That enables us to create posts which HS then sends off
to social media. Posts can be sent immediately, scheduled for specific times,
or (the really nice feature) auto-scheduled by HS -- very handy when we have a
bunch of things to post, HS will spread them out over several days etc.
Currently, everything is manual. Examples of things that go "out the social
channels":
- Ski has posted series of content about Cascadia. HS allows one to bulk upload
from a spreadsheet, so one can draft a series, and HS will schedule it all
automatically.
- I watch several LOPSA RSS feeds and when I spot blog posts, or updates on the
Governance site, I inject them into the social channels. Note that I only feed
"official LOPSA stuff" into the channels to keep the fidelity high. I don't
feed every blog post (eg, members' missives).
- I also take the LOPSAGrams, post them to the web site (creating in-document
anchors so I can direct link from social media) and then schedule social posts
of all the items in the LOPSAGram.
Things we could use/need more of...
We currently have some sort of technical problem where, when I post in HS, I'm
not able to broadcast to the LOPSA Facebook page. (This may not be an issue for
other LOPSA HS team members. Dunno.) Since I do most of the social posting,
this limits our distribution to Twitter, G+ and LinkedIn.
We could use content from more of the committees, the Board, membership
coordinator, etc. John Boris has done a few extra blog posts (which I can then
feed into HS) at my prodding. But we could use some (perhaps, regularly?)
missives from the Board, membership ("it's that time again folks..."),
Mentorship, etc. I posted the Q&A when I saw it appear on the LOPSA site. But
the only "call to go vote" I saw way via email... and that I cannot post a link
to.
(aside: yes, I could go create a LOPSA blog post, but I've volunteered for
enough as it is.)
Finally, we could broaden into more social channels. I'm not sure how LOPSA
manages it's credentials to deal with changing people. But it would certainly
make sense to poll the membership to see what social channels people are
actually using. There might be one or two low-hanging fruit that we can pluck.
