How do we feel about trailing Slack instead of discussion lists? I am of the belief that it would be far better and also has more features than email.

'We' feel that you're trying to push a solution in the absence of a problem.

Other than "I use Slack, so it's more convenient than email" or "I get
better instant gratification from chat systems", what exactly are the
benefits of using Slack over using email?

Email's available to almost anybody, with no requirement to sign up with
(or rely upon) a single source for registration and ongoing support or availabilty or existence -- the mailing lists are archived in multiple locations, if you're interested in reading through the archives (which, tbh, doesn't seem to happen very often, based on the repeated questions that go by the list),

Beyond that, there's also a #lopsa IRC channel on Freenode (and before
you say anything about a single source of control, Freenode is just the
latest home for the channel in question)

It's also important to distinguish between modes of communication which
are essentially informal/transitory (like speech or IM), and modes of communication which have a stronger expectation of persistence (like email) or are outright expected to formally persist (like carving in stone).

Confusing the expectations around various modes of communication can
lead to all sorts of mess -- I might be perfectly happy to say:

        "*ARGH*, FFS you blithering idiot!"

in person, but in a more persistent medium I'd be far more inclined to
write something closer to:

"That's absolutely the wrong way to do things."

Context makes a hell of a difference -- as does the communication medium.

cheers!
