David, you have unfortunately demonstrated one of the drawbacks to email
as an asynchronous channel: the ease of responding without having read
all the latest comments. Allen has (I think) stated clearly that he
doesn't think what his initial comment implied. So we should move on.

But I should point out that Allen's original note, just one line, was
more in the spirit of a chat channel than email. If he had made an actual
proposal with argument in favor, much of this discussion might have been
short-circuited since we would have immediately realized that he didn't
mean what he seemed to mean.

If you think web forums or chats make people read every message before they reply, you haven't used them enough :-)
