I used iTunes as my only tool for a significant time - but its ripping software can be a little optimistic. it errs on the rip something rather than giving up. I had about 5% of my 800 cds ripped badly (clicks, dropouts etc.) Also its ever changing interface started to become painful. Others describe it as bloatware, although frankly the recent Squeeze environment with Facebook and Flicker apps seems to be following the same trend. I still use iTunes to mange iPODs, iPhone and AppleTV, just rip and tag in FLAC then convert and import. If, however iTunes Store started to provide lossless file downloads I would probably switch back. Simpler is better IMHO.
Other people will probably give you extreme views on iTunes, it didn't do what I needed effectively.
