It generally has worked that way for me, but a lot of people have reported the problem you're seeing, so it's not an isolated case.
I suggest trying plug/unplug the headphones a couple times to see if that makes it work correctly. If that fails, reboot the SBC and try again. If that fails, look on the forums for various workarounds.
