I think there was a modular aproach being discussed Wandbord + something ,that something could be Analog boards of all kinds of quality and "Good analogue" can very close to the best anyway :) Re balanced of course a line driver circuit could be used , i think John imidietly thougth of the typical high end aproach with dual balanced DAC's , but for long run's of cable to active speakers even a balanced oine driver would be a benefit . Anyhow a new feature request .
