On the SB3 w/ broken screen, you can peer at the SPDIF port. Gets the job done. Or the led could be on the backside, like the one on an ethernet port. As for a row of Gpio-driven leds on the player face, well it's fun but compared to a display their expressive power is quite limited. So I'd vote no to any sort of led.
