Can anybody define how LMS actually calculates the Artist Count?
Why would you do the counting yourself? Let LMS do it for you, then you don't have to know about the innards :-).
Because the number of artists depends heavily on your LMS settings: what are artists or contributors? Should band, conductor, composer etc. be counted or not? You can't get the number identical to LMS' count without re-implementing all those conditions.
