Here's the problem -- the people you're likely to be interacting with at 
AOL probably actually *won't* know the difference.  Sure, there are 
people there that do, but not the front line helpdesk, and probably not 
the frontline Postmaster team.

Likewise with EIGRP vs. BGP.  If you're not a networking person, then I 
wouldn't expect you to know the difference.  And the odds of you 
interacting directly with their networking people who would actually 
know the difference is -- you guessed it -- very, very low.

Yes, but there is a great deal of shortage of brains and knowledge on 
the front lines of the AOL helpdesk.

They're not allowed to think.  If they think, then they don't follow the 
script, and if they don't follow the script, then they get fired.


I worked at AOL.  I know how bloody freakin' clueless most of the 
frontline helpdeskers are.

Yes, there are a few that have a clue, and they don't stay there for 
long -- if they're smart, they leave before they get fired.  If they're 
not that smart, but they're smart enough to avoid getting fired, then 
they get promoted.
