That's really strange because fred was my default voice when
installing too. Alex came up after installation was finished during
the set up assistant.

Hello,
I don't know, but I got only 1 DVD and it has Alex as the default
voice. Seriously, I'm not making this up.
I did a complete reinstall and erase. Alex is the voice that was
present on my system after Booting from the Install DVD.
Really really really. It is Alex and I'm sure about that.

During the installation, Fred is most definitely the voice. The
Alex voice will not fit on the installation DVD. Trust me on this
one. Alex comes up after the installation.

Hello,
When I installed, Fred was not the default voice, Alex was.

There could be another issue going on. The volume for the speech
could be too low. You can bring up the speech roter (VOKeys-
command) then navigate to the volume option, which is two presses
on the right arrow key when holding down the control-option-
command, then pressing up arrow with those modifier keys
pressed. It will say 100-percent, but just keep pressing up
arrow, and the volume will increase. Note, the speech during the
installation is Fred, not Alex. Alex comes in to effect once you
star the setup assistant.
If you still don't hear speech during the installer, then there
is a bug.

Sorry if saying this is too obvious, but when you put in the
installer cd and it revs up, you do have to use cmd-f5 to turn
on voiceover.
