I started using a PC setup last year, after
producing with hardware for years. I still use the Mackie 8bus and Akai S3000,
but I have made tunes with just Cubase (5.1 not SX), Halion and some VSTs.
The main difference when using s/w only and
hardware, is I obviously lose the warmness of the Mackie 8bus on mixdowns. A
lot of the time, I'm just being anal and most people can't tell the difference
(especially if you've mastered using T-Racks or O-Zone). I use a Yamaha
DSP Factory soundcard (the one with the Yamaha 02 DSP) for software mixdowns
by the way.
What going to a s/w setup has given me though,
is more choices. Instead of buying a new synth for 800, to get some new
sounds, I can get hold of a good quality VST (my choice VSTs being anything by
Native Instruments, Virsyn, RGC Z3ta & Pentagon and Albino -
full version).
Downsides of using s/w (for me anyway), once
or twice a VST patch hasn't work as intended, they can be a little fiddly
to use, (especially Absynth, crap UI, great sounds) & some VST's are CPU
hungry (but this hasn't really bothered me; yet).
My advice would be to get the fastest PC you can
afford (to save you from CPU grief) and the best soundcard you can afford.
Then use Ray's advise for the s/w.

Subject: [dnb-prod] Re: New set
up
I
read that Reason is not open to VSTs or third party stuff, so I was
wondering if anyone purely used Logic and the EXS sampler and ES1
synths etc combined with a wave editor (or Cubase and Halion for that
matter).
Trust - didn't you post recently to say that your entire setup was
based around a laptop and a MOTU firewire audio box - what software did
you decide on? If it was someone else, apologies.
What does it sound like compared to when they used hardware and what
are the downsides?
Cheers
Dan

anyone reckon that I could easily replace the following with
a very fast PC, XP and Reason
if your asking if its
worth it making the leap to only software, Id recommend it. As for
proces, you can get (koff koff)_demo_ software online easily on something
like Kazaa, saving you a grand easy. ---
