Never used Logic, but you _CAN_ work with just Cubase SX and VST instruments and effects. You need Battery and another sampler VSTi and then build from there... I'd also recommend taking a look at Fruityloops. Although it may seem like a toy at first glance, it's a very powerful program. It can load any VST, Direct X and Buzz instrument or effect, very easy to get off the ground, and the possibilities are endless.
