I use my mixer only as a preamp section and for monitoring - right now, I do
all my mixing in the pc. All my live tracks - vocals and instruments etc.
are coming from there, along with all the sound design, my samplers, 90% of
the synths. The only hardware synths I currently own are a Korg Trinity and
an Emu Xl-7 - I sold of the rest and never missed them (well maybe a bit -
but just the familiarity of the sounds. Besides, the old ones are all being
reincarnated as software now :>).
I've got three pcs, chained together with Steinberg Systemlink, and an Oasys
card in one of them. Systemlink is a fucking awesome app, though I had some
crazy teething trouble on the list studio iteration, till I updated all my
drivers. You can even run Steinberg on PC and mac together.
If you mixdown in the pc, you can edit your cds, mix endings together, and
do a better job of mastering demos and other stuff you don't intend to
release. You can also keep your mastering settings and song mixes
permanently, so you can quickly reload them tweak them a bit and render out
again, when you need to.
